It is a Saturday night. I am sitting on my back porch. I had a choice to go for a party or to visit my friends who are camping in nearby Lackawanna State Park. Everyone who knows me, would be surprised that like a good girl I decided to stay home. I have an excuse for that, I am achy and tired! After almost two months of no physical activity, today I went for my first hike with Triple Cities Hiking Club at Merli-Sarnoski Park, PA. As soon as I saw members of the club stepping out from their cars, I knew I was in trouble! They looked thin and fit, which is exactly what I am not. I thought of running away but they spotted me immediately. I had no other choice than introduce myself and hope for the best. They seem to be nice people, I thought. They would not leave me in the woods!
I did hike before, even some long distances, but it was always more like a stroll, taking pictures, frequent stops, enjoying the views. Today’s hike was different. For me it felt more like a run. The trail was not very difficult but at times it was a steady climb. Good thing, the leaders did not know the trail that well so once in a while they stopped to choose the right path. This is what saved me. To be fair, we had one longer stop to eat and enjoy the view of Carbondale below. It was a nice panoramic vista but not my favorite part of the hike. I really enjoyed section following shoreline of the lake. Partially because we were almost done with the hike and it was flat, but mostly because it is a very diverse part of the trail and the views of the lake were gorgeous!
After the hike, we had a nice picnic and I got to know the members of the group a little more. I liked them from the start, but when they offered me a beer they became my instant friends! Even though right now I feel like I was hit by a train, I am sure I will be coming back for more activities with the club. Who knows, maybe one day I will be thin and in a good shape too. Right, I might even grow taller!
